Day Six: Rockin’ and Rollin’ (At Sea)
“Anyone doubtin’ themselves?”
Today we took the Aran Islands Ferry tour from the docks right outside our hotel and traveled about 90 minutes to the island of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland. Being the Atlantic and a windy day at that, the seas were very rough and the young crew of the ferry were regularly passing through the cabin to see if anyone needed a seasick bag. Thankfully, neither of us was “doubtin’ ourselves” and we made it to the island with no trouble.
Our first stop was the bike rental, where we had our first experience with e-bikes. Katey would like to thank the tiny baby Jesus for inventing e-bikes, because they made the five-mile trek each way to Dun Aonghasa quite a bit easier. The high winds and hilly terrain would have made regular biking a bit of a nightmare.
After exploring the ruins, we decided to recreate the photo we took at this same location ten years ago.
From there, we hopped back on the bikes and went into town to shop for an Aran Island sweater. We finished just in time to catch the ferry to our next stop, the Cliffs of Moher. We’d hiked there on our last visit but it was fun to see them from the ocean this time. The highest point is 702 feet above the ocean: more than 2 Statues of Liberty high!
Our ferry returned back to the dock and we took a minute to regroup at the hotel. We quickly headed out with fingers crossed to try Ireland’s famous Dough Bros pizza. According to their site, they were voted Ireland's Number 1 pizza. Every time we’d walked by previously, there’d been a line out the door, but this time we walked right in and it was excellent.
From there, we wandered over to the Aran Sweater Market so Katey could get a knit throw with her Barrett clan name pattern sewn in.
We thought about making one last blowout night in Galway, with another traditional session at The Crane Bar, but it's been a busy day and some quiet time in our room was needed, so we're in for the night.
Tomorrow, we'll grab breakfast, check-out of our hotel and catch the train back to Dublin! 🚉
Less than 72 hours until we get to reunite with our Ashe! Big shout-out to our dear friend Vimala who is taking such good care of him.
Oh I can’t wait to see the knit throw!
ReplyDeleteThanks for having us along on your adventure. I’m thinking-our next trip??
We looked for a sweater with the Barrett stitch but really the throw will be more of a daily use thing anyway! I’ll bring it to Mike’s this summer!
